Accounting Manager
Description
The Accounting Manager is responsible for the supervision and development of Finance Department personnel working in the areas of accounts payable, employee expense reimbursements, payroll, fixed assets, insurance, taxes, general ledger and financial statements. The Accounting Manager ensures that the accounting transactions in these areas are performed in a controlled, timely and accurate manner. This person may also work on a variety of special projects as an individual contributor.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for accounting operations, including transaction processing as well as management reporting
- Manage the month-end close process, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
- Oversee all aspects of the general ledger including chart of accounts, preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, allocations and account reconciliations.
- Prepare complex journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and reporting package for management. Respond to questions about expenses, trends and deviations from budgets.
- Monitor and improve accounting policies and procedures to maintain strong internal controls and meet business needs, with a view towards becoming Sarbanes-Oxley compliant in 2009. Proactively recommend changes where appropriate.
- Coordinate audits by outside auditors, banks, governmental agencies, etc. Act as primary interface with auditors and prepare/review interim and year-end audit schedules.
- Prepare various tax returns as needed, as well as tax packages for our outside tax preparers.
- Assist in special projects as requested (for example, help in preparing budgets). Strong knowledge of GAAP
Supervision
- Supervise staff on a daily basis. Review and approve work performed by subordinates.
- Determine job assignments and responsibilities for all staff. Balance workloads.
- Ensure all transactions are in accordance with company policies and procedures, and are adequately documented and properly filed.
- Ensure written procedures exist for all significant job responsibilities, and that adequate cross-training has been done.
- Hire, train and develop, evaluate job performance and administer wages of subordinates.
- Track monthly statistics for workloads and performance in accounting operations.
RequiredSkills
- Accounting degree, or degree in a business-related major with emphasis in accounting, or equivalent experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP
- Minimum 3 years previous supervisory experience in an accounting department
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook required. Experience with Great Plains and FrX, though not required, would be a big plus
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Comfortable working in a high-growth environment and able to work standard business hours, with some overtime necessary during peak periods
